Grown, packaged and shipped exclusively by Wekiva Foliage. The Alocasia ‘Sumo’ is a hybrid between the Alocasia ‘Portora’ and Alocasia princess ‘Purple Cloak’. It has the size of a ‘Portora’ and the thinner, colorful, and pointed leaves of a ‘Purple Cloak’.
Big and bold, Elephant Ear ‘Sumo’ makes a dynamic statement in a large pot or as a landscape specimen. This easy grower reaches 5-6’ the first year and 8-10’ tall by the second year. The dark, upward-pointing, green leaves are huge – up to 3-4’ long when fully mature – and they reach 2.5’ across.
The Alocasia ‘Sumo’ thrives best in bright indirect sunlight, a well-draining soil mix, temperatures between 65 and 75ºF (18 and 24ºC), and preferably higher humidity levels (at least 70%) but normal room humidity will also do. It only needs to be watered when to top 2 inches of the soil are dry.
The amount of water the ‘Elephant Ear’ Alocasia needs depends on the temperature that it is staying in and the amount of sunlight it receives. Higher temperatures and more sun will make the Alocasia thirstier. For example, during the hot summer months, the plant needs more water than during the colder winter months.
The Alocasia ‘Sumo’ will grow best in medium to bright indirect sunlight but can also tolerate a couple of hours of morning sun or dappled direct sunlight. However, avoid too much direct sunlight because this will burn the leaves and make them crispy brown.
